What is the DS 1140?

DS 1140 applies to load-bearing structures of buildings. That is, building or structural parts that are designed to carry loads. Structural elements can be columns, decks, joints, etc.

The standard requires that the various actors in a construction project perform the task through structured planning, execution and control. It requires documentation and traceability in all phases of the construction project. It also sets requirements for technical understanding, knowledge and impartiality.

What is the purpose of DS 1140

The purpose of the standard is to verify that the load-bearing structures meet the building regulations and the client’s requirements for strength, usability, function and service life.

What does DS 1140 cover

Building project engineer

It is the structural designer who determines the requirements for which building elements are part of the load-bearing structure. The structural engineer divides the structure into structural sections and assigns them to structural classes. It is also the structural designer who divides the structural parts into execution classes. Finally, the building designer can make special checks for particularly important conditions that go beyond the general checks according to DS 1140.

Performers

The contractor (mason, carpenter, blacksmith, plumber, etc.) plans and carries out the general inspection of the building in accordance with DS 1140. The general inspection includes self-inspection and independent inspection.

The contractor is obliged to provide documentation that meets the structural requirements in DS 1140. If the structural designer has special preferences or requirements for the documentation, the structural designer MUST state this during the special check.

The contractor should be aware of what is specified under the special control so that the contractor can take it into account from the beginning of the project and costs associated with it can be factored in.

Construction class

The independent inspection is performed based on the design class and execution class. The design class determines the requirements for documentation, scope and type of inspection (self-inspection, independent inspection and third-party inspection).

Control section

It is the contractor who determines the control sections, which are checked by an inspector.

How to meet DS 1140 requirements

Documentation of the independent verification

The contractor must document the general control. The standard prescribes requirements for, among other things, documentation of the independent control.

A control plan must be drawn up for the independent control. The number of controls must be clearly defined and countable.

The control plan for documented self-inspection, independent inspection and independent special inspection must be submitted to the building contractor. If the building designer has requirements for special controls of a significant nature for the specific project, this must be included when performing the independent control.

After completing the documentation of the inspection, the inspection report is handed over to the building designer.
